JACKSON, Miss. --

A Jackson Police officer is in critical condition after being shot in the line of duty.

"Officer Down."

Two words no police department ever wants to hear.

Monday morning that signal was heard in Jackson.

Late Monday evening, officers searched the area near Clinton Boulevard where six year veteran Dwayne Collier was shot three times.

Investigators were looking for any new evidence.

At University Medical Center, Officer Collier is being treated for three gunshot wounds.

Late Monday night, he was still listed in critical condition here at UMC.

A steady stream of family and friends have shown up to get updates on his condition.

A number of officers and city officials have been visiting to show support.

Many fellow JPD officers held back tears at the fact one of their own is shot in the line of duty.

A Clinton Boulevard resident heard the whole incident but didn't want to be identified.

"Just heard sirens come by and then cars going by real fast. Then I heard about eight gunshots and that was it."

As Collier laid on the ground suffering from his gunshot wounds, JPD says one of the gunman ran off with his cruiser.

That cruiser was later found about three miles away and where a massive manhunt began in the area.

Heavily armed officers canvassed the neighborhood as concerned residents watched on including Ronnie Barnes and his family.

"We knew something was happening because we heard cars jumping this hill flying through here," Barnes described.

Almost an hour later, one suspect was caught in the neighborhood.

A second suspect was captured a few feet away from where the initial shooting took place.

The identities of the two men in custody have not been released yet.

JPD says it is still looking into the possibility of a third suspect in the case but we're told investigators are checking the validity of that claim.
